Apr\u00e8s notre participation au colloque de 2005, nous aurons l\u2019occasion de proposer une intervention sur le th\u00e8me suivant :\u00a0\u00abThe Louvre Abu Dhabi project : cultural diplomacy or business issue ?\u00bb. En voici la pr\u00e9sentation :<\/p>\n

Even within the context of a new phenomenon \u2013 the globalization of large museums like the Guggenheim Museum (New York) or the Hermitage Museum (St Petersburg),\u00a0which have developed a strategy based on the creation of \u201cbranches\u201d abroad \u2013 the announcement by the Louvre National French Museum that it is going to create a branch in Abu Dhabi for an unexpected amount of 1 billion \u20ac has created both a surprise and in some cases a strong opposition.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is therefore essential to analyse in detail the agreement between the Emirate and the French Government to assess the precise conditions of the contract.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, the internationalization of the Louvre Museum (along with numerous other French cultural organizations) raises several questions: what is the link between the global strategy of large cultural institutions and the French cultural diplomacy? How can we evaluate the impact of these strategies in artistic, financial, and diplomatic terms? What does branding mean for cultural organizations? Is this trend inevitable for the largest cultural institutions? Is this the sign of the cultural domination of a few western museums at the expense of local artistic productions? Is it possible (and useful) to facilitate a greater integration between museums and the traditional channels of the cultural diplomacy? For cultural organizations, does globalization mean having a diplomatic strategy per se? Are there finally ethical issues to be raised?<\/span><\/p>\n

Following our presentation in Frankfurt 2005 and the publication of the edited book \u201cL\u2019arme de la culture, les strat\u00e9gies de la diplomatie non gouvernementale<\/em>\u201d (L\u2019Harmattan, 2007), we consequently propose a deeper investigation into the question of the role of nongovernmental cultural organizations in cultural diplomacy.<\/span><\/p>\n
